The flat-screen tv is mounted on the wall in front of the beds. Next to it is a desk, that lifts up to have some storage in it, and your fridge. The fridge had a couple of different types of soda, water, and snacks in it. It was a nice size though as we fit some cake and eventually 2 bottles of champagne in it! Moving up to Deck 7 we’re getting back to more common areas.
BIG picture Viking Mars decks
Most passengers hail from the United States, with smaller quantities of Canadian, U.K. In sum, once onboard you might be tempted not to leave the comforts of your Scandi-cool cabin. Sporting an elegant flair inspired by Nordic nature, Viking Mars often feels like a luxe boutique hotel, without going over the top. Nods to Viking and Scandinavian culture are present in the décor and design elements, while birch tones, wintry blues and earthen hues provide a light and airy ambiance.

Not all inaugural sailings go completely to plan and sometimes there are some technical snags or issues with staff as they get used to their duties and settle in. That's certainly not the case here and everything is seamless, attentive and intuitive. The ever-smiling crew members are clearly very well trained and equally friendly. We've sailed on many ships during and after the pandemic and Viking's health protocols are the most comprehensive and impressive that we've seen. The 930-passenger Viking Mars is the seventh ship in Viking's near identical ocean fleet which began with Viking Star exactly seven years ago. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of Viking, which is the world's largest river cruise line.

This is a beautiful 2-story area with windows overlooking the horizon. There’s a bar here so you can get a cocktail while you’re enjoying the views, reading a book, or playing a game of chess. Mamsen’s is also here which is somewhere you can get some breakfast or lunch options as well. Decks 3-6 are where the majority of the cabins are on the Viking Mars. The machines are free to use, although they might be a bit confusing.
When Viking Mars' predecessor Viking Venus was launched in 2021, it was the first-ever ship to have an onboard PCR testing laboratory with the capacity to test all passengers and crew members every day. This facility has been carried over to Viking Mars and retro-fitted on all the other ocean vessels in the fleet. As all of the ships -- Viking Star, Viking Sea, Viking Sky,Viking Orion,Viking Jupiter, Viking Venus and now Viking Mars -- are like peas in the proverbial pod. Repeat passengers have the comfort of returning to a familiar floating home from home and not spending the first few days aboard trying to find their way around and figuring out how to get back to their stateroom. We're aboard Viking Mars on its inaugural sailing from Malta to Italy at the start of a maiden season in Mediterranean, Scandinavia and Northern Europe. The ship then repositions at the end of the year for voyages around Australia and New Zealand.
These decks have some nice lounge chairs along with a little putt-putt, bocci ball, shuffleboard, and other fun games. My 270 square-foot deluxe veranda stateroom is a vision of blue and beige. A king-sized bed with padded striped headboard is dressed with luxury 100% cotton Debella linens, and an ample closet is tucked into the far corner. I may view movies, live TV, the ship’s restaurant menus and my personal daily schedule on the 42” flat screen TV while sipping a beverage from the mini bar stocked with snacks and soft drinks or a coffee from my Nespresso machine.

These are self-service laundry rooms equipped with ironing boards, washers and dryers. Click deck pictures to go to individual cruise deck plan pages where you can see all the public areas, venues and stateroom cabins categories for each deck. Moving up to Deck 2 we’ve got the upstairs of the atrium area.
All beverages served at the onboard lounges and bars cost extra. Prices are around $6 (cocktail), $4 (beer), $5-6 (wine by the glass). Like the sisterships, Viking Mars offers an intimate boutique hotel-like feel with its signature decor (Scandinavian-themed), luxury fabrics, spacious lounges with classy leather furniture, gourmet cuisine, unique art collection. Unlike most new cruise ships, all Viking OCEAN boats lack Casino (gambling lounge and bar).

So we talked about the ship layout and cabin, and a few things included with the cruise. You can upgrade to a Silver Spirits drink package if you’d like, or just pay for extra drinks as you order them. Additionally, with the shore excursions, there is typically one at each stop that is included (no additional fee). Each day you’ll get a document in your room listing all the upcoming talks, music, etc. around the ship.
But given that Viking is known for port-intensive itineraries, it’s more likely that they daily agenda isn't packed to the brim. Among the vessel's innovative marine technologies are its energy-saving hybrid engines, top-deck solar panels, pollution-minimizing exhaust system. This ship also uses seawater as a lubricant for its propeller shaft bearings. This technology lowers the vessel's maintenance costs and also the risk of pollution. Replacing the biodegradable oils, the water is being directly discharged into the ocean. All Viking Ocean liners were built according to the latest maritime navigation regulations and equipped with latest marine safety systems, including "safe return to port".
Wine, beer and soft drinks are also included in your fare at lunch and dinner. You also have the choice to purchase Viking's Silver Spirit package if you'd like to expand your wine options, or wish to enjoy a cocktail outside of mealtimes. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. Rates are in USD and valid for US and Canadian residents only. When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. We found that, on Viking Mars, the energy of the nightlife depends almost exclusively on the interests of the passengers.
It’s actually pretty easy to completely miss this area, even though you may pass by it many times during your cruise. Next down the hallway are a couple more shops where you can get some beautiful jewelry or traditional Nordic sweaters. The River ones are what they’ve been more known for, and their Expeditions are new and definitely sets them apart! The same expedition ship that can take you to Antarctica can also take you through the Great Lakes! Our journey started in Bergen, Norway, visited a few Norwegian fjords, the Faroe Islands, and then around Iceland. As with all Viking ships, Viking Mars has a minimum age requirement of 18, so you will not find any amenities or facilities onboard that cater to younger cruisers.
Among the suite bathroom's features are also Italian handcrafted fixtures and the heated tile floor. You can see all the bath's details in the combo photo below. All guests (excluding only those in Standard Balcony rooms) also enjoy priority reservations on each of the Viking Ocean cruise shore excursions.
All the suites will be provided with one to three 42in flat-screen, interactive LCD TVs with intuitive remote and complimentary movies on demand. The Viking ships are built according to the latest navigation regulations and incorporate the most modern safety systems, including the ‘safe return to port’. The vessels feature energy-efficient engines, optimised hydrodynamics and hull, which reduce fuel and energy consumption. The vessels are fitted with systems that minimise pollution produced by exhaust gases.
There is an app you can use as well, but we found that surprisingly the printed copy was often times more accurate than the app. If the weather is nice then the doors/windows would be open to the rest of the back. Here there are lounge chairs and tables along with a hot tub and an infinity pool going right off the back of the Viking Mars. For instance, through audio guides narrated by Karine Hagen, you can learn more about the ship's art collection or its public spaces.
The area is also home to a small library that hosts a book exchange, which is quite fitting, since the Living Room is one of the best places onboard to lose yourself in a riveting book. Elsewhere on the ship, Explorers' Lounge has an outdoor terrace that offers commanding views from the front of the ship. On the opposite end of Deck 7, Aquavit Terrace doubles as an al-fresco dining space and pool area.
